Some weekends are fun. Others stay with you long after you leave. A weekend spent in Coastal North Carolina—specifically Oak Island and Southport—is the kind you’ll wish lasted longer. Believe me, I’m ready to go back. With salty breezes, waterfront views, unforgettable food, and the kind of charm you can’t manufacture, this stretch of the Carolina coast is the perfect blend of laid-back beach town and storybook Southern escape.

Start Slow, Stay Late

Begin your morning the coastal way: with coffee in hand and nowhere to rush.

If you’re waking up on Oak Island, start your day at Big Pups Coffee Co. for a local favorite and beach-town energy. If you’re headed into Southport first, grab your latte and a breakfast croissant from Port City Java and stroll the streets while the town is still quiet.

The beauty of this area is that nothing feels forced. Mornings are slower here. The air feels softer. Even the coffee tastes better near the water.

Explore Southport’s Timeless Charm

Southport is the kind of town that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Historic homes, moss-draped streets, waterfront views, and storefronts that feel like they belong in a movie scene—because many of them actually do.

Hop on a golf cart tour and discover the many movies and television shows filmed in this beloved coastal town. You’ll quickly understand why directors keep coming back. Southport has that rare mix of beauty and authenticity.

Afterward, spend time wandering downtown. Browse antique shops and charming boutiques like The Fresh Cottage and Mad River, where shopping feels more like treasure hunting than errand running.

And yes—there’s a reason Southport has become a Southern Living favorite.

Lunch With a View

When it’s time to eat, you have options— and none of them disappoint.

Seafood lovers should make a beeline for Moore Street Oyster Bar, a longtime favorite known for fresh oysters and coastal flavor. For a lively waterfront atmosphere, Fishy Fishy Cafe is a must.

You really can’t go wrong here. The hardest part is deciding where to go first.

And if the day calls for something sweet, make it over to Flava’s for ice cream. Vacation calories don’t count here.

Adventure on the Water

No weekend on the Carolina coast is complete without getting out on the water.

Take the ferry to Fort Fisher and spend the day exploring the North Carolina Aquarium, a family favorite and perfect option for all ages. It’s a scenic ride and a fun adventure rolled into one.

Later, walk out onto the Southport marshwalk or book a sunset boat tour and keep your eyes on the water—dolphin sightings are part of the magic. As the sky turns gold and the breeze cools, it becomes the kind of memory you talk about for years.

Oak Island Favorites

Back on Oak Island, the vibe is casual, welcoming, and effortlessly fun.

Craving wings? Head to Lonerider’s. Need an easy beach-night dinner? Grab pizza from Pepperoni Grill. Looking for a tropical cocktail and relaxed atmosphere? Koko Cabana is always a good idea— and so are the mahi tacos. You can thank me later.

Want something a little elevated for dinner later? Add Salt 64 to your list.

A Day Trip to Bald Head Island

If you have one extra day, take the trip to Bald Head Island.

No cars. No rush. Just golf carts, bikes, maritime forest, and stunning coastal beauty. It feels like stepping into another world— peaceful, quiet, and beautifully preserved. A little island time is the perfect reset inside an already relaxing weekend.

End the Day Where Time Slows Down

As the sun begins to set, head back to Southport’s waterfront.

Find one of the porch swings overlooking the water and just sit for a while. Watch the boats and large barges pass by. Listen to the breeze move through the trees. Let the day settle in.

That’s the real magic of Oak Island and Southport. It isn’t just the restaurants or the activities or the views.

It’s how this place makes you feel.

And once you’ve spent a weekend here, you’ll understand why so many people keep coming back.
